First Steps for Your Own Online Business



How easy it will be to start an online business will depend on your current skill set.  In demand skills, such as writing, programming, editing, website design, data entry, telephone skills, and technical expertise are very marketable online.  Rentacoder and Scriptlance are just two of many freelance exchanges that bring freelancers together with prospective customers. There are also listing services that provide freelancers with customers for a fee.

For those of us without special marketable skills, affiliate marketing is a viable option.  There are many affiliate programs to evaluate and you should first sign up with the ones that allow free members and offer free training and resources. Use their services to learn everything you can about internet marketing and advertising. 

The basic things you need are good products and advertising


At one time I thought that you should only look at affiliate programs that have been in business for several years.  However, the main thing in my opinion now is to look for product value.  Are the products useful?  Are the products in demand?  Do they appeal to a broad range or people or just a specialized group?  In other words, know your market.  Right now the most popular market areas on the internet have to do with romance, sex, health, gambling and home business.  You can also look for niche markets, but they often have limited appeal.  Niche marketing is another subject and is often used in connection with websites and blogs to earn AdSense income.

Research is the key. You can find valuable information and services available online without cost. You can find sites that will give you the top 500 searches on google, free website hosting, free web building tutorials, free web building programs, free instructions on blogging, free keyword research, free SEO instruction (search engine optimization) and almost anything else you could require as a beginner.  There are many useful and some costly programs available, but they are not necessary to start your first work at home online business.

You should be able to start an online business for less than $500. Just don't begin spending hard earning cash until you have done your homework.  You can earn income with affiliate programs, blogging or by simply advertising products as an affiliate without a personal website or blog.

Any work at home online sales program is a numbers game and you need to advertise constantly.  Free advertising works.  It takes more effort and time but there is no financial risk.  Paid advertising sometimes works, but there are no guarantees and the cost can be substantial.  It is usually better to use free advertising methods at first. It is my humble opinion, best to delay more expensive types of advertising until you have an in demand product, have mastered the art of writing effective ads and know where to advertise.
