Child Mittens Knitting Pattern

This mitten pattern is ideal for beginners and intermediates wanting to make classic look mittens. To really go for the classic look it is recommended you use brown Sheep yarn however other yarns will work well for customizing your mittens.
 
This design requires a number four and number six double pointed needles. You will also need a ring marker and a stitch holder. The stitch holder should be small or two safety pins will suffice. A ruler and a darning needle are also required.

Please note that this design is aimed at children however is also suitable for adults alike. To make the guide easier we have included the alterations that you should consider for different sized hands.

In understanding the size of people's hands it is best to get a tracing, or alternatively check their hand size in relation to your own.

For a small child: subtract six stitches.
For a large adult: add twelve stitches and work the thumb gusset to fifteen/seventeen stitches.

Steps to child mittens knitting pattern:

Cuff

With number four needles cast on 32 stitches and then join. Work in the round of *K1, P1* ribbing for 3 inches. Using six inch needles *K*, make first stitch and then repeat around. Next round should be done using six inch needles. Completing*K8 make 1 stitches repeating around 36 stitches. The round after this is K1, place marker and K around.
 
Thumb Gusset

The first round is making first stitch, then k to marker, make one stitch, slip marker then knit around: This should be completed for thirty eight stitches.

The second round is K around. You should then proceed to repeat rounds 1 and 2 until there are 13 stitches on the first needle before the marker. Whilst doing this the ending number will be two stitches greater than the previous round. This is forty eight stitches.

Hand

Knit across thirteen stitches and then put them onto holders. You should then knit around mitten until you are back to where you put the stitches on holders. You should then increase first stitches to keep knitting in the round. Put your beginning of the round marker after the stitches. This should be completed for thirty six stitches. Work in the round until the mitten clears your pinky finger.

Top Decrease

Row 1: *K4, K2 together* repeat around thirty stitches.
Row 2: k
Row 3: *k 3, K2 tog* repeat around twenty four stitches.
Row 4: k
Row 5: Proceed as above until you have six stitches.


Cut yarn leaving a twelve inch tail...with darning needle, run yarn through six remaining stitches twice and pull tight. Weave in end.
Pick up all stitches on thumb holders going into the mitten fabric above the thumb. Opening and picking up three stitches over where you cast on the one stitch before starting the hand, you should then join. This should be repeated for sixteen stitches.

In round one knit around whilst decreasing two stitches by k2tog above two spots where stitches seem loose at "sides" of the thumb. This is for 14 stitches.
Knit around until the thumb nail is clearly covered. K2 tog* should be repeated around until 6 stitches remain. You should close as for top of mitten.
