Child Vintage Knitting Pattern

In creating this child vintage knitting pattern you will develop a garment to be proud of. The archaic styling, and strong definition provided by this article is a result of the pattern stitch that is used throughout.

What next?

You will require a size 14, a 1pr and number 8 needles. The gauge will be one inch equals five stitches and seven rows.

Pattern Stitch

Work in the ribbing of P 4, K 9 JOR for 6 complete rows. In the next row work a double cable in each panel of K9. Now continue in ribbing and hereafter work a double cable in each panel of K 9 every fourteenth row, until each panel has cable twisted 2 times, then work 6 rows and then discontinue working one K. panel after each end whilst the 3K panels remains. Continue in pattern for 2 more twists in each of these panels and then work 6 rows and discontinue 1 more K panel each side until one knit panel remains. Continue until two more twists have been made in this panel and then work six rows and discontinue the knit panel. Please note that work will be entirely in reverse stock stitch).

Back

Firstly cast on 69 stitches and work even in pattern for two and a half inches.
Now start shaping sides by decreasing 1 stitch each end by half an inch. This should be done four times. Now work half inch in even piece measures of five inches. Now increase 1 stitch each end every half inch four times. Now just work even until piece measures thirteen inches. Now bind off 3 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows.
Decrease each end every other row four times. Work even until armhole measures seven and a half inches and bind off.

Left Front

To start cast on 54 stitches and work 11 stitches. Do center edge in Moss stitch for a double border. Now work remaining stitches in cable and rib pattern same as back shaping work at underarm every half inch after the first two and a half inches are worked even.

Complete until the piece measures the same as the back and start the underarm and bind off four stitches. Do this at underarm edge. Now decrease one at this edge every other row five times. Whilst doing this binding you should bind off these 4 stitches. Now start shaping the neck by decreasing first stitch. For the inside border every third row nine times, then every 2nd row eight times. Work even until arm is seven and a half inches long.

Now bind off all except border stitches. Now Work two and a half inches until even on Moss stitch and bind off.

Right Front

The right front is worked to correspond with the other side. Despite this start buttonholes one inch from bottom and make five spaced every two and a quarter inches apart. In order to Make at center edge work one stitch and bind off 3 stitches, then work 3 stitches and bind off 3 and then finish the row. Next row cast on over those that are bound off.

Sleeves

Firstly cast on 41 stitches and work on forty one stitches. Now work in Moss stitch and work 2 inches even. This will make a cuff that can be turned upwards. Now change to reverse ST stitch and increase one at the beginning of every row fourteen times. Continue work even until piece measures 4 1/2 inches long.

Now bind off three at beginning of next two rows decreasing one each end every inch four times. This will apply to each row another four times. Now work two togs across row and work back before binding off.
 
Finishing

Fold border back and hem down on wrong side of work to make a double border. Try to buttonhole stitch around each buttonhole. Then slip stitch all seams together and set in sleeves to complete the Child Vintage Knitting pattern.
