Spool Knitting for Children

Spool Knitting for Children

A common starting point for many children interested in knitting and crafts is the very traditional French knitting. French knitting, so often useful on those rainy afternoons, requires a spool (usually wooden), which has nails or pins ranging from 4 to 8 in number protruding from one end for wrapping the yarn. French Knitting spools can easily be found in your local craft shop, or alternatively made at home. To make your knitting spool, you need an empty wooden thread spool or a cylindrical piece of wood with half a centimeter diameter holes through the centre. Then, hammer 4 nails or pins at regular intervals around the centre hole, to finish.

Spools are available in some form from most respectable online retailers for children's arts and crafts and toys, if you're less adventurous. There are also a range of arts and craft sets which contain all the materials necessary to start your child spool knitting, so it might be a good idea to shop around until you know what you're looking for. To get your child spool knitting in no time, just follow the four simple instructions below:

1. Thread the yarn from top to bottom through the spool knitter.

2. Wind the yarn in an anti-clockwise direction round the nails to cast on. Make sure you don't pull the yarn too tightly, as this will make it harder to knit your first round.

3. Wind the yarn around the outside of the nails in an anti-clockwise direction to knit.

4. Use a needle or pointed object to lift the loop now on each nail over the yarn round the outside. Continue in an anti-clockwise direction until the cord is long enough. Then cut the yarn and thread it through the each loop to cast off.

A relatively simplistic form of knitting, your child will surely take hours of pleasure in this style. With the ability to produce stunning results whilst remaining simple to master, you could get your child spool knitting with relative ease, helping to keep them amused and out of your hair!
