Beanie Hat Knitting Pattern
Simple
beanie hats are all the rage, from the London streets where they were
popularized by football star David Beckham, to many American college
and high school campuses, following the style of many popular music
groups. Create your own hat from a beanie hat knitting pattern chosen
to suit your own style.
The
simplest beanie hat knitting pattern
has a stretchy rib stitch border, so that it clings tightly to the
head, and a straight forward one- or two-color design - often just a
single or double stripe of a contrasting color toward the middle of the
hat.
A particular
problem you may encounter in knitting stripes in the round is the
visible "jog" that happens when you switch colors. Here is one method
to reduce this jog during knitting: when beginning a row or round with
a new color, knit the first stitch as a double-ply knit stitch using
both the old and the new color, then knit the second stitch with the
new color alone. Later you can tug on the extra stitch in the first
color from the reverse side of the fabric until the jog is hardly
visible. Similarly, you can try tying the long tails of the two colors
together in a tight knot on the reverse side - with practice, this can
also tug the join into an invisible jog. (Do a search for "jogless jog"
to find more techniques.)
Of course
you can make fancier beanie
hats with more decorative colors or stitch patterns if you wish.
Multicolored yarns create many different effects, from variegated yarn
that forms random pools of color to heathered or tweed colors that have
flecks of different colors spun right into the yarn. Ribbon yarn can
make excellent beanie hats, especially close-fitting caps like 1920s
cloche-style beanie hats. And any basic beanie can be dressed up with a
rolled or ribbed brim in a contrasting color, or in a different type of
yarn altogether - chunky, loosely spun yarn can give a pleasing fuzzy
brim, while eyelash yarn or "fun fur" can provide a delightfully fluffy
edge.
Looking for a
beanie hat pattern to suit your style may take a little while, as there
are so many out there to choose from, but you're sure to be pleased
with the result!
