Knitting Hats for Children

Knitting for children can be a joy - projects are quick and easy and kids love having things made especially for them. Finding a kid hat knitting pattern can be a bit of challenge. You must decide what sort of kid hat knitting pattern you are looking fore, and then find the proper yarn and knitting needles to finish the project.

There are many types of kid hat knitting patterns, ranging from the cute novelty knitting patterns which look like animals or monsters, to sweet frilly knitting patterns meant for babies or young girls, to elegant no-nonsense utility hats to protect the kid from snow or sun.

Narrowing down the type of yarn you wish to use is a good first step - a search for "wool yarn" or "cotton yarn" or "acrylic yarn" along with "kid hat knitting pattern" will turn up patterns better suited to your knitting preferences. Remember that kids - especially babies -- often have sensitive skin. Before choosing a hat pattern, it's often a good idea to ask the parents if the child has any allergies to wool or other fibers.

Then take into account the preferences of the child. Is the kid you are knitting for a fashion plate who wants their kid hat to match their favorite jacket or scarf? Then you will want to search for a kid hat pattern that matches their style, and shop for a yarn in their favorite colors.

If the kid you are knitting for is more interested in fun than fashion, you may want to search for a more whimsical kid hat knitting pattern. There are patterns with dinosaur spines, or googly eyes, or wildly colored yarns. There are even novelty yarns such as "fun fur" which knit up into a furry surface similar to their favorite Muppets!

Some children will enjoy having smaller versions of an adult pattern as well. A few patterns may be available in "mother and child" sets, or you can experiment with scaling an adult pattern down yourself, by calculating the number of stitches and pattern element repeats required to make a smaller hat.

Knitting a hat for a kid can be one of the most satisfying projects you will do!
