Rolled Brim Hat Knitting Pattern

Cute and jaunty rolled brim hats are wonderful accessories for your own wardrobe, not to mention excellent gifts for the fashion-inclined among your friends and relatives. Best of all, most patterns are very easy and very quick to knit!

The basic rolled brim hat knitting pattern produces a long tube worked evenly in stockinette (stocking stitch) for several inches, followed by several rows of decreases.  This creates a squat, cylindrical hat with a rim that rolls almost all by itself, due to the natural curliness of stockinette.

Here's a simple rolled brim hat knitting pattern from Claudia Krisniski of Countrywool. You can substitute a different worsted weight yarn if you choose, but be sure to knit a gauge swatch and measure to see if it comes out to 4.5 stitches per inch. If not, adjust your needle size or your knitting tension, or choose another yarn. (Or you may wish to do the math to adjust the number of stitches and the frequency of decreases to make the required rolled brim hat size.)

To Fit Sizes:
small (20")
medium (21.25")
large (22.5")

Materials:
1 skein - Lamb's Pride Worsted (4 oz., 190 yards)
16" circular # 6 or # 7 or size for gauge
set of double pointed needles to match
darning needle
stitch markers

Gauge:
4.5 stitches = 1"

Instructions:
With 16" needle, cast on 90 (96, 102) stitches. Join and work in the round.

Place marker here to denote the beginning of the round. Work in stockinette stitch (meaning you will knit every round) for 6 inches.

Decrease the top of the hat as follows:
Round 1: *k 13 (14, 15), k2tog (together), repeat from * until you reach the stitch marker at the end of the round.
[you will have 84 (90, 96) stitches after this row]
Round 2: k
Round 3: *k 12 (13, 14), k2tog, repeat from *
[you will have 78 (84, 90) stitches]
Round 4: k
Round 5: *k 11 (12, 13), k2tog, repeat from *
[you will have 72 (78, 84) stitches]
Round 6: k

Continue in this manner until 48 stitches remain, then decrease every round until 6 stitches remain. Cut yarn and draw through last stitches, and bind off. Weave all your cut ends into your hat, curl the brim, and shape the hat as desired.
