Scarf Loom Knitting Pattern

To knit a flat scarf, or indeed any flat garment on a round knitting loom, this can be done by working only a part of the way around the loom. Rather than closing the circle, simply just stop wrapping the pegs after the required width.

Pre-requisites:

  • 1 Round knitting loom of any style or size
  • 1 Knitting Loom Implement
  • 1 Skein yarn
  • 1 Thumb tack
  • 1 Crochet hook

Instructions

For this scarf, it is recommended to be knitted 1/2 (one over two) which means wrapping the first row thrice before pulling the first strand over the second strand, third strand and top of the peg ('knitting off')

Wrap the yarn around the front of the last peg and continue all the way around to the back of the next peg and then continue wrapping in the traditional "e" wrap until the next end peg, before repeating the end wrap once more.

Once the wrapping of the third row is completed, tie the working end of the yarn off to hold it in place. This is where the thumbtack or push-pin can be useful to secure the loose yarn. Once the loose yarn is tired, start knitting the bottom row over the top two working from the first peg toward the place where wrapping stopped.

Continue knitting 1/2 until the scarf is the desired length. This should be easy to determine, because there is no shrinkage or cinching of the scarf length, such as when knitting hats.

To remove the scarf from the loom: Knit off the last row and cut the working yarn, leaving a tail of at least three times the width of the scarf. With a crochet hook, begin on the opposite side of the scarf from where the yarn tail is. Hook the loop from first peg onto the crochet hook, lifting it off the peg, then lift the loop off the next peg and pass it through the back stitch on the hook. Continue this process until all the loops are off the knitting loom. Tie a square knot and weave your yarn ends into the scarf.

Tip: To keep the edges of the scarf from rolling, wet the scarf with warm water until damp before smoothing it out on a flat surface and placing heavy flat objects on top. After several hours/over night the scarf should lie flat.

Good luck with this scarf loom knitting pattern!
