Poncho Knitting Patterns

After a number of years out of fashion, knitters everywhere will surely be celebrating the return of the poncho. The easy to knit classic look poncho in this poncho knitting pattern is not only practical, but also stylish and would make an ideal gift for any fashion conscious friend.

Not only are ponchos fashionable but they are a great gift to suit those fussy friends. They can choose the color from a variety of yarns and then you can knit away safe in the knowledge that you friend or loved one will be delighted.

Before knitters can get started there are a number of things to prepare. Firstly, the knitter should know that the gauge is two stitches or between three and four rows is equal to one square inch. Secondly the knitter should have picked colors and have yarn ready, and they should also have needles, ribbon (optional) and a hook.

The next stage involves deciding which size to make the poncho. The pattern guide included below is for a women of dress size 10. Should the wearer be bigger than this then the knitter can choose to add rows, or even remove them for a smaller women or a young girl /teen.

The second stage is getting down to the pattern. For the first row and the third row the pattern should go K1, K2kog and then purl. In the second row the row should follow this pattern for one hundred and thirty stitches; YO, k2tog and then repeat. You should then centralize; this is an appropriate place to stop as it is easy to come back to the next stage

The neck and shoulder follow the pattern of WS ensuring the stitches are not decreasing. This would ruin the look of the poncho almost entirely The stitches should be worked across all five additional stitches. It is possible that you will get a poncho that is too loose; if this happens then just add a few stitches around the perimeter and it should look great in no time.

Good luck with  your poncho knitting!
