Are You Prepared for a Home
Business?
Now
that you know all of your reasons for wanting to start a home business,
your experience, skills and
resources, have your family onboard and have a work space set aside,
what can
you expect? I keep
posing the questions
about whether a home business is right for you.
I can’t emphasise it enough. A
home business is not a hobby; it has serious implications for you and
your
family, so you have to be prepared.
1.
Expect
to Be Busy
Are
you ready for the
changes? A home-based business can absorb all your time and energy
especially
at first There is a risk that you can ignore your family and home life
as you devote so much time to your
new business. Try to take into account your family's needs
and
your own needs for R and R You can actually destroy your
family
and business if you fall into the trap of the workaholic.
A workaholic becomes isolated from family and friends and that causes
stress. A new work at home business always takes more time
than
you might at first expect. You can not foresee all the
difficulties ahead. During start-up,
there
never seems to be enough time in the day to do what needs to be
done. Expect to be
very busy launching your business, so set aside extra time in schedule
to avoid the feelings of being overwhelmed.
2.
Make
the Right Decision
How
honestly have you
considered the influence a home-based business will have on all the
parts of
your life; family, social, professional, personal? Objective
critical thinking is necessary so try
discussing your plans with someone whose judgement you can trust.
Consult someone who can be completely objective rather than a family
member
or close friend. Ask that person to tell you frankly their opinion
about the
following
Have
I carefully assessed my reasons for wanting to be home-based?
Have
I considered what will be needed personally
to succeed?
Have
I checked out the real reactions of family members? Do they
understand the effects of a work at home business on family life and
have they agreed to support my efforts?
Use this
informatiom to reassess your business
goals. You
may decide that a business from home isn't a good option at
the
moment.
Perhaps you should delay your start-up until you have fewer
responsibilities. Perhaps
you should start part-time, living off other regular income. Starting a
home-based business is a lifestyle choice, not just another career
option.
Where you live is primarily a home, not a place of business. This means
the
business will constantly have to make adjustments or changes to prosper
in your
home
location. Make sure you have also considered, and
rejected, the possibility
of locating the business elsewhere. Some people need the discipline
of
working at a specific place and time. If you fall into that
group, a work at home business or freelance job will not
succeed.
